Virginia agency offers tools for planning holiday travel

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Department of Transportation is offering tools to help motorist plan holiday travel.

The department says its 511 system provides real-time information about traffic, road conditions and incidents. The system can be accessed online at 511Virginia.org or by dialing 511 from any phone in Virginia. Motorists also can download a free 511 app.

Most highway work zones will be suspended during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays to limit congestion.

VDOT commissioner Charlie Kirkpatrick says in a news release that motorists should plan ahead because the Christmas and New Year’s holidays are busy times for travel.
